US$1.1 billion in Phu Quoc Island projects await greenlight

"The provincial Planning and Investment Department said Sunday the agency had proposed three separate projects invested by the US Rockingham, Canadian Automind Capital Group Inc. and French Victoria to the Planning and Investment Ministry for approval."
"Of those, the US-initiated project on a beach-tourism complex in Ham Ninh Commune is at the top of the list in terms of capital – worth $1 billion. The runner-up is $120 million tourism port, apartment and ecological reserve project in An Thoi township proposed by the Canadian investor. The French Victoria group plans to develop a tourism village in O Quoi Cap, Cua Can Commune on the north island."

Eco-Tourism vision for paradise

"Besides incentives similar to those applicable for free economic zones and border trade areas, Phu Quoc can also offer special incentives regarding investment management, immigration control, land rent, corporate income tax, personal income tax and import tax for machinery and equipment....the Government has allowed overseas Vietnamese to buy houses associated with land in Phu Quoc. Foreign residents and foreign investors can buy houses and rent land long term and enjoy the one-price policy."

EU helps develop human resources for tourism sector

"A training course on the marketing and advertising of tourist destinations have been organised on Phu Quoc Island, off the coast of southern Kien Giang province, for officials from 39 tourism departments nationwide. The course, jointly conducted by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) and the European Commission (EC), is part of a 1.4 million USD project to develop human resources for the Vietnamese tourism sector, funded by the European Union (EU)."

"International investors pledged an estimated $3.8 billion to Vietnamese ventures in the year 2006...On little Phu Quoc Island off the southern edge of the Mekong Delta, lots of construction (and planning) is going down. Long Beach Ancient Village Resort in Duong To, a mid-market resort, will open soon, and Le Veranda Resort & Spa on Duong Dong Beach is just opening its doors now. Many reckon that little Phu Quoc will see development ala Thailand's Phuket, so get there before the road cuts and wrecking balls as it is still a quaint little backwater getaway."

Phu Quoc Island Moves Upmarket with Grand Mercure Resort

“The first Grand Mercure resort in Asia will bring a new level of accommodation to one of region’s hottest emerging beach destinations,” said Mr. Patrick Basset, Accor vice president for South and Southeast Asia. The reason why Phu Quoc Island has been chosen, Basset said the island remains largely undeveloped and half of it remains forested with many deserted and unspoilt beaches.

A US$ 158 million international airport to be built on Phu Quoc Island
February 2006
Vietnam: There are plans to build a US$ 158 million international airport on the country’s southernmost island in 2006 to boost tourism, according to Vietnamese state media. The airport would be built on Phu Quoc Island off Kien Giang province to handle 2.5 million passengers annually when operational in 2008. A cruise ship port would also be constructed on Phu Quoc in 2007. While Vietnam still maintains a heavy military presence on the northern part of the island, around 100,000 tourists, including 40,000 foreigners, go there each year.
